The ULS, short for Urban Literacy Society, is a collective of urban observationists who are driven by a wide range of research questions investigating human behavioral patterns within the urban fabric, extracting detailed pleasures that are unique to city life and are the sources for non-linear urban story telling.
The ULS will employ situationist strategies and urban observation studies to explore Madrid, with a particular focus on local individuals and their site-specific observations and stories. We will translate those stories into urban literacy devices to make visible the beauty of a particular spot or routine. The goal is to shift our perception and to understand human behavior and motivations within the urban infrastructure. We will appropriate existing materials representing the neighborhood and prototype objects that will be field-tested and documented.
The exhibition will be a concoction of written stories, materialized objects and collaged still and moving images, representing our research and facilitating cross associations, understanding and exchange.
We will inaugurate The Madrid Protocol to explore various strategies and methods for learning, understanding, and communicating in and moving through the city.
We hope to wake up the urbanist in you!
